ReIndiana holds off Minnesota in second straight overtime win
Defending national champion Indiana beat unranked Minnesota 23-16 in overtime after a last-second 60-yard field goal tied the game, extending its close-game run.
Fourth-ranked Indiana escaped again on Saturday, beating unranked Minnesota 23-16 in overtime in its second consecutive extra-period game. The defending national champions needed a late rally and a dramatic finish to keep their undefeated run intact, a result that extends a stretch of narrow wins from a team that won the title last season. Coverage of the game noted that the Hoosiers have not looked as dominant as they did during their championship season, yet they are still, for the most part, stacking wins.
Backup quarterback Grant Wilson found Charlie Becker for a 25-yard touchdown on the first play of overtime, and the Hoosiers' defense then stopped Minnesota on its possession. The Golden Gophers had taken a 16-13 lead with 19 seconds left on Luke Drzewiecki's career-long 60-yard field goal. Minnesota's advantage lasted only briefly. Becker's 33-yard catch set up Paddy McAteer for a career-long 60-yarder as time expired, forcing overtime. The two kickers' long efforts defined the late stages of a game that was otherwise decided by a handful of possessions.
The game was also shaped by quarterback changes and replay decisions. Indiana pulled starter Josh Hoover at halftime after he took a heavy hit on his second interception of the season, leaving the offense to Wilson for the second half. Two late replay reviews then overturned potentially decisive plays: one erased a go-ahead touchdown pass for Minnesota, and the other nullified an interception that would have put Indiana deep in Minnesota territory in the final minutes. Both reversals altered the closing sequence and kept the score within reach for either side.
Wilson finished with 156 passing yards and a touchdown. Hoover recorded 119 yards, one touchdown and an interception before his halftime exit. Becker caught eight passes for 149 yards, including the game-winning touchdown. For Minnesota, quarterback Drake Lindsey completed 20 passes for 120 yards and one touchdown, while Javon Tracy had seven receptions for 40 yards. Drzewiecki and McAteer each produced a career-best kick at the same moment in the fourth quarter, a fact that made the finish one of the most memorable of the young season.
The victory came one week after Indiana beat Michigan 13-6 in overtime, the Hoosiers' first win at Michigan Stadium since 1967. In that game, Indiana also needed extra time to secure a result, and the back-to-back overtime finishes have made the defending champions' schedule a test of composure. The Hoosiers now have a bye before hosting Southern California on Nov. 14. Minnesota, which fell to 0-13 against defending national champions, will host No. 7 UCLA next Saturday. The Golden Gophers have not beaten Top 25 opponents in back-to-back weeks since 1956, a statistic that underscores the difficulty of their upcoming stretch.
