The Golden State Valkyries and the Atlanta Dream will meet in Game 7 of the WNBA Finals, the first deciding game of a championship series in league history. Both franchises are seeking their first WNBA title, so the winner will claim the championship for the first time in its existence.

The matchup comes after a best-of-seven series that has been closely contested. The WNBA moved to a best-of-seven format in 2025, replacing the best-of-five Finals used in earlier seasons. That change means that a Game 7 is now possible, and this year's series has reached it with the teams tied at three wins apiece, leaving the championship to be decided in a single game.

The series has also drawn attention to how audiences for the Finals are measured. USA Sports and NBC have promoted record viewership figures throughout the series, including 1.5 million viewers for Game 6 across USA Network, E! and SYFY, combined with streaming led by Peacock. Those numbers were compared with previous Finals games, but the comparisons have raised questions. The releases combine television and streaming audiences without breaking out how much of each came from either platform.

Media analysts have noted that the 2024 Finals clincher between the New York Liberty and Minnesota Lynx on ESPN drew 2.15 million viewers, a figure that the newer releases did not mention when promoting their own totals. NBC called its Game 4 audience of 1.9 million across NBC and Peacock the most-watched Game 4 in WNBA Finals history, a claim that depends on including streaming numbers measured separately by Adobe Analytics. According to Sports Media Watch, NBC's television audience for that game was 1.66 million, slightly below the previous ESPN record, with about 232,000 viewers coming from streaming.

Nielsen, the primary television ratings company, changed its measurement methods in 2025 to combine its household panel with data from smart TVs and set-top boxes, and it expanded out-of-home viewing measurement to include places such as bars and restaurants. Those changes make direct comparisons with older ratings difficult. Fox's president of insights and analytics, Michael Mulvihill, posted that Nielsen had told clients that mixing internal or third-party data with Nielsen metrics to make comparative statements in the press is not permissible.

For fans, the central fact is simpler: Game 7 will decide the first WNBA champion from either franchise, and the result will be settled on the court rather than in the ratings debate that has surrounded the series.
