ReThunder lose Chet Holmgren for 8 to 10 weeks with knee injury

Oklahoma City will be without Chet Holmgren for an estimated eight to ten weeks after a right knee injury, adding to a run of early-season NBA injuries that already includes Jalen Williams and Cason Wallace.

The Oklahoma City Thunder will be without Chet Holmgren for an estimated eight to ten weeks because of a right knee injury, a significant blow for a team already dealing with several absences. The Thunder said Holmgren began experiencing knee discomfort on Sunday. After consulting with multiple specialists, he underwent a biological treatment on Friday for a small tear in his patellar tendon.

The injury arrives at a difficult moment for Oklahoma City. The team was already bracing to play without Jalen Williams and Cason Wallace, potentially for the rest of the regular season. Wallace underwent surgery on Friday for a labral tear in his left shoulder. The procedure was performed in Los Angeles by Dr. Neal ElAttrache at the Cedars-Sinai Kerlan-Jobe Institute, with Thunder medical personnel present. The guard will be evaluated again before the regular season ends.

Williams suffered a broken left fibula and a dislocated left ankle on Sunday, the same day Holmgren first reported knee discomfort. The Thunder said that after his surgery he will also be reassessed before the end of the regular season. Taken together, the absences of Holmgren, Williams and Wallace leave Oklahoma City with a thinned rotation at a stage of the season when the team would normally be settling its lineup and building rhythm.

Holmgren's situation is a reminder of how a seemingly minor structural problem can keep a player out for weeks. A small tear in the patellar tendon, the band of tissue that connects the kneecap to the shinbone, was treated with a biological procedure only after the Thunder's medical staff consulted several specialists. The eight-to-ten-week window gives the team a clearer timeline than the open-ended language attached to Williams and Wallace, whose status will not be fully clarified until later in the season.

The Oklahoma City injuries are part of a broader run of early-season setbacks across the league. Earlier this week, ESPN reported that Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards was expected to undergo an arthroscopic procedure to address discomfort in his right knee. That procedure is expected to sideline the three-time All-Star for up to two months, placing another high-profile name on a growing list of players who will miss significant time. For the Thunder, the timing makes depth and availability a central concern as the season progresses.
