ReBrewers raise World Series trophy at Lambeau Field during Packers game
Milwaukee Brewers players Brandon Woodruff, Christian Yelich and Sal Frelick brought the Commissioner’s Trophy onto the field at Lambeau Field on Thursday night, a day after the team’s first World Series title.
The Milwaukee Brewers carried their first World Series championship into a Green Bay Packers game on Thursday night, bringing the Commissioner’s Trophy onto the field at Lambeau Field. Pitcher Brandon Woodruff presented the trophy at the end of the first quarter of the Packers’ game against the Carolina Panthers, and teammates Christian Yelich and Sal Frelick joined the moment.
Frelick attempted a Lambeau Leap of his own, drawing a warm reaction from the Packers fans in attendance. The appearance came less than 24 hours after the Brewers clinched the franchise’s first World Series title with a Game 5 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays. Lambeau Field sits roughly 120 miles north of Milwaukee, which allowed the celebration to continue across the state almost immediately after the championship was decided.
The moment at the stadium was part of a longer run of celebrations. Yelich, who has been one of the most visible faces of the team’s championship run, had earlier paid a touching tribute to a late, beloved broadcaster following the World Series win, a gesture that showed how closely the club’s players have tied their achievement to the people who followed the team over the years.
The next stop in the celebration is expected to be on Friday, when thousands of fans are anticipated to line the streets for a victory parade honoring the Brewers. Milwaukee Public Schools, Wisconsin’s largest school district, announced it would close that day, citing operational and safety concerns. The district said the closure would also give faculty and students the opportunity to attend the parade.
The parade route will run through downtown Milwaukee and end with a fan fest at Henry Maier Festival Park. The event marks a significant moment for a city whose sports fans have waited a long time for a title of this kind, and organizers have planned the day around the large crowds expected to fill the downtown streets.
The Brewers’ win also shifts the broader picture of championships in Wisconsin. The Packers have not won or reached a Super Bowl since the 2010 season. With the Brewers’ World Series title and the Milwaukee Bucks’ 2021 NBA Finals victory, the Packers now hold the longest championship drought among Wisconsin’s major men’s professional sports teams, a fact that adds a layer of context to the warm reception Frelick received from Green Bay supporters.
On the field, Green Bay entered Thursday’s game coming off a Week 7 loss to the Detroit Lions. The Panthers jumped out to a 3-0 first-quarter lead, but the Packers responded by taking a 20-10 halftime lead and extended the advantage to 27-10 in the third quarter. The game unfolded while the trophy was being shown to the crowd, giving the evening a mix of Packers competition and Brewers celebration.
