ReGrand Jury in Washington Declines to Indict Cassidy Hutchinson

A grand jury in Washington declined to indict former Trump administration aide Cassidy Hutchinson, whom the Justice Department had sought to prosecute over her 2022 testimony to Congress.

A federal grand jury in Washington declined to indict Cassidy Hutchinson, a former White House aide in the administration of Donald Trump. The Justice Department had sought criminal charges over statements Hutchinson made to Congress in 2022. Two sources confirmed this information to Fox News Digital. The attempt to indict failed on Tuesday, and it remains unclear whether federal prosecutors will make another attempt.

The Justice Department intended to charge Hutchinson with lying to a House committee investigating the January 6, 2021 riot at the Capitol. The department failed to obtain a grand jury decision to bring charges. Fox News Digital had previously reported that a grand jury in Washington was hearing evidence regarding Hutchinson's possible false testimony before the committee. At that time, a source familiar with the case said additional evidence could be presented to the jury as early as the following week, and that no final decisions on possible criminal charges had been made. The New York Post also reported that the Justice Department was examining possible false statements she made to Congress.

Hutchinson was one of the most prominent witnesses before the House select committee that investigated the January 6 riot and Trump's efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election. She worked for former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows. During hearings broadcast nationally in June 2022, she described Trump's actions on January 6, including information she said she heard from another White House staffer about the president's reaction when he was told he could not travel to the Capitol. Her account of an alleged confrontation inside the presidential vehicle was later disputed by other people familiar with what happened.

The grand jury's decision not to indict does not mean her testimony was either true or false, and the outlet emphasizes that the question of truthfulness remains open. Hutchinson has previously stated that she stands by her testimony. According to sources, the investigation into her was referred to the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division, which typically handles matters such as police violence and election integrity. This stands out given that the case concerns statements made to Congress. Fox News Digital sought comment from the Justice Department and from the offices of Congressmen Barry Loudermilk and Bennie Thompson, but the article does not include their responses.
