ReResident Evil executive producer says the series story will conclude within 10 years

Capcom executive producer Jun Takeuchi says the Resident Evil storyline has a defined ending that could arrive within the next decade, while several new games are planned.

Capcom executive producer Jun Takeuchi has said the overarching story of the Resident Evil series has a definite conclusion, and that it could arrive within the next decade. Speaking in an interview with Yahoo Japan, Takeuchi laid out the company's plans for its flagship horror franchise, a statement that will be closely watched by a fan base that has followed the saga for decades.

According to Takeuchi, the series narrative was not fully mapped out from the start. Instead, it grew with each new release. He said the team faced its greatest challenge while planning Resident Evil 2 Remake and developing a ten-year branding concept. He added that players who go through the games in full should come to understand the meaning behind the order of the remakes.

Takeuchi tied the timeline to the recent launch of Resident Evil Requiem. "With the release of Requiem this year, I feel like the first 10 years have come to a close, so I think the conclusion will come in the next 10 years," he said. The comment suggests the company views the current decade as a completed chapter, with the broader story expected to reach its end in the decade ahead.

Takeuchi did not say whether the characters that fans have followed, including Leon, would be part of that final story. He also gave no details about future projects beyond confirming that more titles are coming. "I can't say, because it would spoil the fun for everyone, but there won't be just one. There will be multiple titles," he said.

The franchise has been a major commercial success for Capcom. Resident Evil 2 Remake is the best-selling game in the series, and Resident Evil Requiem surpassed $500 million in revenue after its release earlier this year, becoming a driving factor in console sales in Japan. In the first half of Capcom's 2027 fiscal year, Resident Evil 2 Remake ranked among the company's top ten best-selling titles, with Resident Evil 7 close behind. Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil 3 and Requiem also appeared on that list, meaning half of the company's top sellers in that period came from the series.

Fans have more on the way in the near term. A Code Veronica remake is set to launch early next year. Screenwriter Haris Orkin has also reportedly hinted at a story mode DLC for Requiem that is expected to involve Spencer in some way. Separately, Zach Cregger's Resident Evil film received strong reviews and performed well at the box office.
