Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Christian Yelich says he hopes the 2027 Major League Baseball season starts on time, even as the current collective bargaining agreement is set to expire at 11:59 p.m. on Dec. 1. Without a new deal, there will be no MLB season in 2027, a possibility that has become a central concern for players, owners and fans heading into the offseason.

Asked by OutKick whether he was optimistic about an on-time start, Yelich offered a measured response. "Yeah. You know, that's the goal, obviously," he said. "It's going to be an interesting offseason here. We'll just see what happens. But yeah, I think that would be awesome. I think that's what everybody's hoping for." He made the comments while celebrating with Brewers fans during a victory shift at Raising Cane's in Greendale, Wisconsin, following the franchise's first-ever World Series title.

Yelich told the Associated Press before the Brewers clinched the title in Game 5 that the game is "in a great spot right now," and said it would be "a shame if we miss time." He is familiar with the stakes. The last CBA was agreed upon in March 2022, after weeks of uncertainty in which neither owners nor players appeared willing to move on their demands. The deal was finalized, but spring training games were lost, and the 2022 regular season opened on April 7 rather than March 31.

During that stretch, teams continued signing players to new contracts, with a combined total of more than a billion dollars in salaries. Deals included Byron Buxton with the Minnesota Twins, Corey Seager with the Texas Rangers and Kevin Gausman with the Toronto Blue Jays. This offseason's notable free agents include Tarik Skubal, Freddy Peralta, Seiya Suzuki and Michael King, among others.

The central dispute remains spending. Owners have proposed a salary cap and a salary floor to reduce the disparity in payrolls across the league. Players have rejected a cap and floor as a non-starter. Instead, they have called for expanded free agency, expanded salary arbitration rights and a higher league minimum salary. They have also proposed a tax on teams that fail to keep payrolls above a certain floor, a measure intended to encourage overall spending.

The gap in payrolls was visible in this year's World Series. The Brewers won 103 regular-season games and ranked in the middle of the pack in payroll, while their opponent, the Tampa Bay Rays, had a bottom-three payroll and the best record in the American League this season.

MLB remains the only major professional sports league in the United States without a salary cap. The NFL, NBA and NHL all operate under one. Differences were narrowed in the 2022 negotiations, but some observers expect this round to be harder. The players' association has also changed leadership, with Tony Clark forced out and former All-Star infielder Bruce Meyer taking over. Meyer led the players' side in the last negotiation. Owners and commissioner Rob Manfred have so far appeared firm in their positions.

The next key date is Dec. 2, when the status of a possible lockout will become clear. The larger question is whether any work stoppage extends into the regular season. Yelich said he believes everyone wants baseball to start on time, but warned that if talks become contentious, the sport could face a situation similar to the 1994 strike that cancelled the end of that season.
