ReDemocratic socialist Janeese Lewis George wins DC mayor's race
Councilmember Janeese Lewis George, a Democratic socialist, won the District of Columbia mayoral race with nearly 85 percent of the ranked-choice vote and said she is willing to work with the Trump administration where it benefits residents.
Janeese Lewis George, a Democratic socialist and sitting member of the D.C. Council, has won the race for mayor of the District of Columbia, capturing nearly 85 percent of the ranked-choice vote. The 38-year-old will succeed Democrat Muriel Bowser, who is not seeking reelection. Lewis George also signaled that she is open to cooperating with the administration of President Donald Trump, even as the two sides disagree sharply on several key issues.
Lewis George defeated Green Party candidate Robert Gross and Independent Rhonda Hamilton. Her platform centered on affordability for residents, opposition to mass federal layoffs and a rejection of a militarized presence on city streets. Her victory adds her to a growing group of democratic socialist mayors who now lead major American cities, joining leaders in New York City, Seattle and Providence.
In her remarks after the win, Lewis George said she would work with the Trump administration on matters that benefit people who live in the District. She also said she plans an early forensic audit of all D.C. government agencies to identify waste and fraud. That review is likely to be among the first tasks of her administration, and it reflects a central promise of her campaign to make city spending more accountable to residents.
The relationship between the incoming mayor and the White House is complicated by past comments. Trump has previously called Lewis George a «communist» and vowed to block her agenda. He has said he would meet with her, but he has also made clear that he opposes her positions on policing, cooperation with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and prisons. Those issues are central to the city's governance, because the federal government holds considerable influence over the District in ways that do not apply to other American cities.
The mayoral result came the same week that Democrats made significant gains in national midterm elections. By Wednesday morning, the party had flipped at least 29 House seats, according to a tally of results. Democrats also gained control of the Senate, including seats in Texas, Iowa, Kansas and South Carolina. Representative Hakeem Jeffries is likely to become the first Black House Speaker, a development that would mark a historic milestone for the chamber.
Looking ahead, Democrats have said they plan investigations into the Trump administration and into the finances of its allies. The party remains divided, however, over whether to pursue a third impeachment of Trump and how far to move to the left. Those internal debates will shape how Democrats in Washington approach the coming session, much as the District's new mayor will have to navigate a city whose budget, policing and federal relationships are closely tied to decisions made in Congress and the White House.
