ReFlorida State fires football coach Mike Norvell after losing to Clemson

Florida State has fired head football coach Mike Norvell following a 36-24 home loss to Clemson, a decision made amid fan frustration and a season that has slipped to 3-5. The school will pay a buyout worth $50.3 million, and Rick Stockstill has been named interim head coach.

Florida State has fired head football coach Mike Norvell, ending a tenure that had become increasingly strained after a 36-24 home loss to Clemson on Saturday night. The school made the decision on Sunday afternoon, and the buyout Norvell is owed is reported at $50.3 million, one of the largest such payouts in college football.

The move followed a rapid escalation of frustration among the Seminoles fanbase. Thousands of seats at Doak S. Campbell Stadium were empty for the Clemson game, and the team has dropped to 3-5 this season with only one ACC win. School president Richard McCullough had met with athletic department administrators and donors over the previous twelve hours before finalizing the decision. Earlier that week, McCullough had penned an open letter asking supporters to show up for the student-athletes for the rest of the 2026 season.

In a statement, McCullough said the school had « made the decision to change the leadership of our football program » and thanked Norvell « for his commitment and service to Florida State ». He added that the university « understand[s] the deep passion of Seminole fans and share[s] their high expectations for this program ». Rick Stockstill was announced as interim head coach.

The decision carries a longer history. Three seasons ago, Florida State was in contention for a College Football Playoff spot before quarterback Jordan Travis suffered a season-ending injury, and the Seminoles were left out of the postseason despite a 12-0 regular season. Norvell was unable to recreate that level of success. The team went 2-10 in 2024 and 5-7 last season, and fans had been calling for his removal for some time.

Norvell had signed a contract extension that included the substantial buyout, which made the decision costly regardless of timing. The school had also already moved on from another key administrator this fall: in September, athletic director Michael Alford was fired, leaving officials to weigh the football program's direction without a settled leadership structure. Officials had reportedly hoped Norvell could win enough games this season to regain fan support for a return in 2027.

Boosters, according to the reporting, had seen enough after Saturday's game. A banner flown over the stadium before the Clemson contest called for the school to fire Norvell, though it misspelled his name, and social media amplified the message over the weekend. Norvell had hosted recruits on Sunday while the school deliberated, and the decision came only after a majority of financial backers signaled support for a change, which made it possible to cover the buyout and pursue a new coach through the transfer portal.

Florida State now faces the task of finding a permanent successor in a college football landscape shaped by name, image and likeness deals and the transfer portal. The reporting notes that the school could spend an additional $50 million to hire a new coach and staff, underscoring the financial commitment behind the change. The opening is expected to draw interest from coaches across the country as the search begins.
