Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville sharply criticized his party for failing to properly vet Senate candidate Graham Platner, warning that younger campaign staff ignored a fundamental rule of politics and paid the price. Speaking on the «Politics War Room» podcast Wednesday, Carville said the Platner campaign exemplified a shift away from traditional political wisdom, leading to a scandal that has upended a competitive Senate race in Maine.
Platner, a Marine Corps veteran and former oysterman, suspended his Senate campaign Tuesday after a sexual assault allegation surfaced. Maine resident Jenny Racicot accused Platner of rape in interviews with Politico and CNN on Monday, alleging he entered her home uninvited while intoxicated nearly five years ago and forced himself on her. Platner has denied the allegation and insisted his withdrawal was not an admission of guilt.
Carville noted that Platner’s rise was driven by a younger generation of consultants, many in their late twenties, who were not constrained by older political norms. «They were not sort of straitjacketed by the old rules of politics, and it looked like they had some real success,» Carville said. He pointed out that Platner’s team had defeated an incumbent governor and led in early polls, but failed to conduct basic vetting. «You didn’t vet your own candidate? You mean you didn’t know?» Carville asked rhetorically. «We used to get our own oppo researchers to do an oppo research book on us. It’s the most important research you do.»
The strategist suggested that the campaign avoided digging into Platner’s past because it was recent and uncomfortable. «I don’t think they knew. I don’t think they wanted to know,» Carville said. «It’s so, so '80s to do a briefing on your own candidate to find out what’s wrong with him. But, you know, there are certain rules in politics.»
Carville’s criticism marks a stark reversal from his previous defense of Platner just over a month ago, when he downplayed earlier controversies, including reports of a Nazi-associated tattoo and allegations of inappropriate behavior. At that time, Carville argued that Platner’s combat experience and unconventional background made him a valuable candidate. «He’s f---ed up. He’s been shot at. He’s a veteran. He’s a little bit weird. He’s an oysterman,» Carville said then. «Maybe we need a combat veteran right on that Senate floor who is f---ed up.»
One of Carville’s earlier defenses has aged particularly poorly. He compared Platner’s tattoo controversy to World War II alliances, saying, «If Franklin Roosevelt and Winston Churchill could work with Joseph Stalin — who, by the way, well, I'll tell you this, he was a bad guy, a really bad guy, all right — then I can overlook a tattoo.» He also dismissed a past incident involving Platner and a woman, stating, «I don’t know how to tell The New York Times this, but boy puts hand on girl’s t---y, girl moves hand, boy walks away rejected and despondent. It happens.»
The scandal has broader implications for Democrats in Maine, where Platner was seen as a strong contender for an open Senate seat. His suspension leaves the party scrambling to find a replacement candidate ahead of key filing deadlines. The race is considered crucial for control of the Senate, and Platner’s withdrawal could shift the political landscape in the state.
Carville’s remarks highlight a generational divide within the Democratic Party over campaign strategy and candidate vetting. He argued that the Platner campaign’s failure to follow established procedures was a costly mistake. «They took off in this campaign, and all of this was recent. It wasn’t way back in some other godforsaken time,» he said.
