ReColts trade Pro Bowl guard Quenton Nelson to Seahawks
The Indianapolis Colts traded perennial Pro Bowl guard Quenton Nelson to the Seattle Seahawks for a 2027 third-round pick and a 2028 fifth-round pick, a move that signals a rebuild as the deadline approaches.
The Indianapolis Colts traded perennial Pro Bowl guard Quenton Nelson to the Seattle Seahawks on Tuesday, a move that many see as the first sign the Colts are stepping back from the 2026 season. In exchange, the Seahawks are giving up a third-round pick in the 2027 draft and a fifth-round pick in the 2028 draft.
Nelson, 30, has anchored the Indianapolis offensive line and has been selected to eight Pro Bowls in each of his previous eight seasons. His departure is the most significant sign yet that the Colts are preparing for a reset. The team enters the deal with a 2-5 record and is mired in a three-game losing skid.
The Colts have already fired general manager Chris Ballard, and the next general manager will need draft capital to rebuild a veteran roster. Last year at the trade deadline, Indianapolis gave up multiple first-round picks to acquire cornerback Sauce Gardner, a move that now leaves the franchise looking to restock its picks. The higher draft pick Indianapolis is receiving arrives in 2027, which adds value compared with waiting for a compensatory selection in 2028.
Nelson is also unsigned for 2027, meaning the Colts could have lost him in free agency without receiving anything in return. Trading him now allows the team to secure a 2027 pick instead of risking a later and less certain compensatory selection. The deal reflects that calculation as much as the team's current standing.
For Seattle, the trade comes after a strong stretch. The Seahawks are coming off a 20-3 victory over the previously undefeated Kansas City Chiefs and are working to defend their Super Bowl title. Adding Nelson gives the club a chance to upgrade its offensive line. With him in place, the team is expected to move 2025 first-round pick Grey Zabel from left guard to right guard, the position he played at North Dakota State.
The Colts have not described the move as a sell-off, and such a designation would likely draw criticism from the league. Still, the signals from inside the organization are clear. Running back Jonathan Taylor's wife recently said her family is keeping a «abbsTransaction watch» on the Colts, a comment that suggests players are aware of the uncertainty in Indianapolis.
Nelson was not the only Colts player linked to possible trades before the November 10 NFL trade deadline. Other names reported as potential trade candidates include Buckner, who is considered the next most likely to be moved because multiple teams have inquired about his availability, according to a league source. Wide receivers Josh Downs and Keenan Allen have also been mentioned. Whether further deals happen will depend on interest from other teams and the price Indianapolis is willing to accept.
Ed Dodds is currently serving as the interim general manager and oversees what appears to be a deliberate restructuring of the roster. Dodds previously worked in Seattle under general manager John Schneider for years before joining the Colts, and that relationship helped facilitate the Nelson trade.
