ReDamon Albarn Raises Palestinian Flag Onstage as Macklemore Tour Fallout Widens
Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn held up a Palestinian flag during a Florida concert, telling the audience never to be neutral, days after Macklemore was removed from Ed Sheeran's tour over his Free Palestine activism.
Damon Albarn, the frontman of the English band Gorillaz, held up a Palestinian flag and draped it over his shoulder while addressing the audience at a Florida concert, in a gesture that appeared to answer the removal of rapper Macklemore from Ed Sheeran's tour over his calls for a free Palestine.
«Don't forget this. Ever. Stand your position. Don't ever be neutral,» Albarn told the crowd during the performance, according to accounts of the show. The moment quickly circulated among fans and drew attention because it came just days after Macklemore was pulled from Sheeran's Loop tour.
Gorillaz is among a group of performers who have used their stage time to promote pro-Palestinian causes since the Oct. 7 attacks. The band previously took part in the Together for Palestine concert in 2025, an event organized in support of Palestinian organizations. At the Glastonbury Festival in 2024, Albarn asked the audience directly whether they supported Palestine, pressing them on whether they considered the war unfair.
The context for Albarn's gesture is the decision to remove Macklemore from Sheeran's tour, a move that prompted several progressive figures to rally behind the rapper and criticize Sheeran. Representatives for Sheeran have said he was not involved in the decision to drop Macklemore from the lineup.
Macklemore has since defended his activism and his decision to lead a «Free Palestine» chant at his own shows and to perform his anti-Israel song «Hind's Hall.» In a lengthy Instagram statement, he addressed the tour removal directly, writing that Sheeran and his team had made the decision to remove him from The Loop tour. He added that he did not consider himself a victim, nor Sheeran, nor the singer Pink, noting that all of them have careers, money, opportunities, safety, and audiences around the world.
Sheeran addressed the controversy during a show, telling the crowd that he had tried throughout his career not to act as a political commentator because he wanted his music and concerts to be about unity rather than division. He said the situation had become a humanitarian issue he could no longer avoid commenting on. He described the Oct. 7 attack on a music festival in Israel as horrific and said it had compounded centuries of Jewish pain, while calling what is happening in Gaza catastrophic, unjustifiable, and disproportionate.
The episode has become the latest flashpoint in a broader debate over how musicians handle political statements onstage and what consequences follow. Albarn's flag display places him alongside Macklemore in using a live performance to take a public position, while Sheeran has tried to frame his own stance as a response to a humanitarian crisis rather than a political alignment.
Requests for comment from Gorillaz and Sheeran were not immediately answered. The dispute has continued to draw reaction from fans and public figures, with the tour decision and the onstage gestures keeping the conversation alive across the music world.
