ReWhat the Stack Overflow Collapse Actually Tells Us About AI

The near-99% figure describes new questions, not total traffic. More broadly, AI is changing the economics of public knowledge, stock imagery and freelance marketplaces without eliminating the internet itself.

There are two ways to read the decline of Stack Overflow. The sensational version says AI erased 98.5% of the site’s traffic. The evidence does not support that wording. The more useful version is that the number of new questions has fallen by roughly 99% from its historical peak, and that change helps explain a wider economic shift across the internet.

Stack Overflow once received more than 6,700 new questions per day. By May 2026, the figure was about 42. Research indicates that ChatGPT accelerated an existing decline in public contributions. Routine questions that once became durable, searchable pages are increasingly resolved in private conversations with language models.

Why does that matter? The open web has traditionally depended on a three-part bargain. Users publish useful material. Search and social platforms distribute it. Publishers, creators and communities receive traffic, reputation or revenue in return. Generative AI can compress that chain by reading many sources and delivering a single answer without requiring the user to visit any of them.

The scale is no longer marginal. Similarweb estimates generative AI platforms averaged 9.5 billion monthly web visits between June 2025 and May 2026, up about 70% from a year earlier. Cloudflare says this growth is producing a widening gap between AI crawling and referrals back to publishers.

The same compression is visible in digital marketplaces. Shutterstock’s second-quarter 2026 revenue fell 17% year over year, with content revenue also down 17% and subscribers falling to 951,000. Fiverr’s marketplace revenue declined in the first quarter and active buyers dropped 17.8%. Fiverr shares in late July were about 96.6% below their 2021 closing peak.

But the “AI destroys every intermediary” thesis fails when tested against Upwork. Its first-quarter 2026 revenue rose 1%, gross services volume was roughly flat near $987 million, and AI-related work GSV grew more than 40%. Demand for AI-related skills rose 109%, according to the company. The platform is being repriced, but the work is also being redefined.

There are also signs that AI can send traffic back when product design encourages it. Similarweb reported that referrals from ChatGPT roughly tripled after a May 2026 interface change made links more prominent. Google similarly argues that AI search can generate useful outbound visits. Those are important counterpoints because they show that zero-click behavior is not an unavoidable technical law.

The core shift is from selling access to information toward selling trust, verification, expertise and execution. Routine answers and first drafts are becoming cheaper. Human judgment, accountability and difficult integration are becoming relatively more valuable. The traditional internet is not being switched off; its business model is being renegotiated in real time.
