ReShooting near Florida A&M stadium leaves 12 injured including children
Twelve people, including several minors, were injured in a shooting near Bragg Memorial Stadium at Florida A&M University in Tallahassee during Homecoming Week.
Twelve people, including several minors, were injured in a shooting near Bragg Memorial Stadium at Florida A&M University in Tallahassee on Saturday night, police said. Eleven of the victims were hit by gunfire, according to the Tallahassee Police Department, and the incident has drawn condolences from the university and city leaders.
The Tallahassee Police Department said the shooting occurred just before 8 p.m. near the intersection of Perry and Manatee streets, close to the stadium. Of the 12 known victims, six are adults and six are juveniles, Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence E. Revell said during a news conference. The youngest victim is 11 years old. One victim was in critical condition, two others were seriously injured and eight were listed in stable condition, police said.
Police said preliminary information indicated a physical altercation took place before the gunfire. Authorities described the incident as an isolated episode involving two or three individuals. No arrests had been announced as of the latest police update. The Tallahassee Police Department's Violent Crimes Unit is investigating, and detectives are working to identify those responsible. Police are asking anyone who witnessed the shooting or has information about it to contact authorities.
The shooting occurred during Florida A&M University's Homecoming Week, when students and alumni gather in Tallahassee for the annual celebrations. One report said it came hours after the university's homecoming game. The university said the incident happened near campus and that the campus itself remained safe, urging people to avoid the area so law enforcement could conduct its investigation.
Revell described the wounded as victims whose families now face the devastating impact of the violence, and he said it was especially heartbreaking that children were among those hurt. He also praised officers who, before the scene was fully secured, put their own safety at risk to carry victims to safety and transport them to hospitals. He called their actions nothing short of heroic and said they reflected the courage and compassion officers bring to the community every day.
Tallahassee Mayor John Dailey called the shooting a truly horrific and heartbreaking tragedy. In a post on X, he wrote that the FAMU family is not alone and that the entire community stands with those affected. The university expressed its hearts going out to the victims and all those affected by the incident.
