ReCall of Duty Movie Director Peter Berg Teases Story on the Cost of War
Director Peter Berg says the upcoming Call of Duty film will focus on the Modern Warfare storyline and explore the human toll of war, while praising the franchise's characters.
Call of Duty movie director Peter Berg has offered new details about his live-action adaptation, promising a film with «a very strong soul» that explores «the cost of war». Speaking in an interview with ComicBook, Berg outlined his approach to the project, which is a reimagining of Activision's first-person shooter franchise being developed by Skydance and Paramount.
The film will focus on the Modern Warfare portion of the series, and Berg said he and writer Taylor Sheridan have drawn on the games for inspiration. He pointed to characters such as Captain Price, Soap, Ghost and Alex as complex figures rather than simple action archetypes. «These are complicated humans», Berg said. «These are not – and no disrespect – cartoon characters or comic books. These are very nuanced storylines; like, there's a real soul to the Modern Warfare universe».
Berg acknowledged that the franchise includes violence, weaponry and combat, but argued that the games are fundamentally concerned with the burden carried by those who fight. He described the warriors as people who have chosen, for whatever reason, to place themselves between danger and everyone else. He said the film would reflect that theme, with consequences of war running through the story under the title «duty». He also said the movie would likely be less graphically violent than his upcoming film The Mosquito Bowl, a sports-war film set to premiere later this month.
Berg's comments mark a shift from his stance in 2013, when he called video games based on war «pathetic» and used the term «keyboard courage». At the time he said anyone who spent four hours a day playing such games was weak and should «get out, do something». Some fans have questioned whether he is the right director for the franchise because of those remarks, though Berg's recent praise for the Modern Warfare characters suggests a more favorable view of the series now.
The Modern Warfare storyline most recently expanded with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, which concluded Activision and Infinity Ward's reboot narrative when it launched. The game's story has been described as one of the darker entries the franchise has offered in recent years. The film is scheduled for theaters on June 30, 2028. No further plot details have been announced, and fans have already speculated about casting for characters including Captain Price and Ghost, though none of those roles has been confirmed.
The release also fits into a wider run of video game adaptations, with a film based on Elden Ring set to arrive a few months earlier and a Battlefield movie also in development.
