ReSeahawks Sign Veteran Running Back Joe Mixon After Backfield Injuries
Seattle added 30-year-old Joe Mixon on Monday after a workout, placing him on the practice squad as the team copes with the loss of Kenneth Walker III and rookie Jadarian Price.
The Seattle Seahawks signed veteran running back Joe Mixon on Monday after a workout, moving to shore up a backfield that has been depleted by free agency and injury. Mixon, 30, will begin on the practice squad as he works back into playing shape, putting any immediate game action on hold.
The move comes even as Seattle sits at 3-1 following a 30-23 Week 4 win over the Los Angeles Chargers. The Seahawks lost Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III in free agency, and first-round rookie Jadarian Price was placed on injured reserve, leaving the team thin at the position.
Mixon spent all of 2025 recovering from a severe foot injury suffered shortly after a 1,000-yard Pro Bowl season with the Houston Texans in 2024. In that campaign he rushed for 1,016 yards and 11 touchdowns in 14 games, earning his second Pro Bowl selection.
Seattle is betting that Mixon has enough left to provide power to a battered running back room. An aging runner coming off a full year on the sideline is already a difficult sell in today's NFL, and Mixon's history of off-field headlines adds another layer of risk for any team considering him.
In 2014, video showed Mixon punching Oklahoma student Amelia Molitor and breaking four bones in her face. Oklahoma suspended him for the season. He later entered an Alford plea and was ordered to complete 100 hours of community service. Several NFL teams reportedly removed Mixon from their draft boards before the Cincinnati Bengals selected him in the second round in 2017.
Legal issues followed him into the professional ranks. In 2023, Mixon faced a misdemeanor aggravated-menacing charge tied to a road-rage incident in Cincinnati, but a judge found him not guilty at trial. Separately, in March 2023, a teenager playing a Nerf game near Mixon's home was shot by Mixon's sister's boyfriend. Authorities did not charge Mixon, but the victim's family sued him and the alleged shooter. The lawsuit was settled in 2025.
When available, Mixon has produced. In seven seasons with Cincinnati, he won the 2018 AFC rushing title with 1,168 yards and earned his first Pro Bowl selection in 2021, helping the Bengals reach Super Bowl LVI. In that game, Mixon threw a six-yard touchdown pass to Tee Higgins.
His production continued in Houston, where he proved he still had plenty left in 2024. Now, after missing all of 2025, Mixon gets another chance in Seattle. The Seahawks are banking on him having enough gas left in the tank to bring much-needed muscle to a running back group that has been hit hard by departures and injuries.
