Division-II running back MicahJo Barnett dies after medical emergency during season opener

William Jewell College is in mourning after junior running back MicahJo Barnett was pronounced dead following a medical emergency on the sideline during the team's season-opening game Saturday. The Division-II matchup against Fort Lewis College at Greene Stadium in Liberty, Missouri, was suspended after the incident, and the school announced a vigil would be held that evening on the Jewell quad.

The college's athletic department confirmed the death in a social media post, saying the community was grieving the loss of Barnett. "Our thoughts & prayers are with MicahJo’s family, teammates, friends, & coaches," the statement read. The school also noted that a vigil would take place at 8 p.m. in honor of Barnett and his family.

Barnett had scored a touchdown earlier in the game, not long before the medical emergency occurred. The school's interim president, Dr. Drew Van Horn, thanked first responders for their rapid efforts to save the player. "We appreciate the response from the sheriff’s office, the police department, EMS team, physician for the team, everybody responded so quickly, so well," Van Horn told Fox 4 KC. "Our hearts are heavy and we just appreciate all the support that we have received from the greater community."

Barnett, a business major at the small liberal arts college, was from Shawnee, Kansas, and was one of seven siblings. He attended Liberty North High School, where he led the team to a state title during his senior year. At William Jewell, he appeared in eight games as a freshman and was limited to five games in 2025 due to a season-ending injury.

The cause of the medical emergency has not been disclosed. The college has not yet announced whether the game will be rescheduled or how the team will proceed with its season. The Liberty community has begun to gather in support of Barnett's family, teammates, and coaches as they process the sudden loss.

William Jewell College is a private liberal arts institution in Liberty, Missouri, competing in the Great Lakes Valley Conference at the NCAA Division II level. The school has not released further details about the incident or any plans for memorial services beyond the Saturday vigil.
