Utah defensive lineman Jamal Wallace has been suspended indefinitely from the football program after being accused of rape and of sharing videos of the incident on social media, the university said.
Wallace, a senior, was arrested earlier this month on charges that include five misdemeanors, according to reports. He has denied assaulting the alleged victim and was released on $5,000 bail.
In a statement, Utah said it was made aware of the situation on Oct. 11 and placed Wallace on an indefinite suspension from the program immediately. «We take these matters seriously,» the statement read. «As this is a pending legal matter, we have no further comment at this time.»
The woman told investigators she was in an on-and-off relationship with Wallace, and that on Oct. 9 the two were discussing their relationship when he forced her to perform oral sex and have intercourse, multiple outlets reported. She also alleged that Wallace physically assaulted her during the incident.
Salt Lake City police said they found videos of the incident on Wallace's phone. The woman claimed the videos were sent to five people via Snapchat.
Wallace appeared in one game this season after transferring from Tennessee. He appeared in six games for the Volunteers last year.
The suspension leaves Utah without a senior defensive lineman as the program continues its season. The university has not indicated whether Wallace will face further discipline from the athletic department or the school.
The case remains under investigation, and no further details about the charges or the legal proceedings have been released. Wallace's status with the team will depend on the outcome of the investigation and any court proceedings.
