ReWichita Dispatch Audio Shows Mass-Casualty Response After Soccer Field Crash Killed Boy and Man
Newly released dispatch audio captures first responders treating the Stryker Sports Complex crash as a mass-casualty incident after a pickup struck children and spectators, killing a 6-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man and injuring 10 others. The driver was released without charges pending toxicology results.
Emergency dispatchers in Wichita, Kansas, classified the crash that killed a 6-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man at a youth soccer complex as a mass-casualty incident, according to newly released audio of the response. The recordings capture first responders rushing to the Stryker Sports Complex after a pickup truck drove into children and spectators on Saturday.
The dead were identified as Cole Adrian, 6, and Nicholas Schafer, 35. Both were from McPherson, a city northwest of Wichita. Ten other people were injured, including five children, according to police.
The 34-year-old woman driving the Chevrolet pickup was taken into custody at the scene but released without charges, police said. She was freed pending toxicology results and an examination of the vehicle. Investigators consulted the Sedgwick County District Attorney's Office before her release. Police have not said whether criminal charges will follow.
Two of the driver's children were inside the pickup at the time. One of them was playing soccer on a different field at the complex, authorities said. Investigators interviewed the driver and more than 30 witnesses, including the two children who were in the truck.
A 30-minute log of dispatch communications outlines how the response unfolded, with dispatchers using the abbreviation «MCI» — mass-casualty incident — to describe the scale of the emergency as ambulances and emergency crews were sent to the scene.
On Monday, the City of Wichita said its public works division would install temporary barriers at key locations around the Stryker Sports Complex until more permanent solutions can be implemented. The city also said it would assess security around the complex, and that police would be present at the facility this coming weekend, along with local mental health professionals to assist families in the aftermath of the tragedy.
McPherson Mayor Jim Loving issued a statement addressing the victims and their families. «There is nothing I can say that makes that right,» Loving said. «To the families who lost someone: this whole town is grieving with you, and we will stand with you for as long as it takes. To the injured and their families: we are praying for your recovery.» The mayor also thanked bystanders who stepped in before the first ambulance arrived and the first responders in Wichita and in McPherson.
Wichita police described the case as an active and ongoing investigation and said updates would be provided when available. The crash has left the McPherson community mourning two residents and raised questions about safety at the sports complex, which the city says it will review in the days ahead.
