RePregnant Mother Days From Delivery Among 8 Killed in Erie, Pennsylvania, Home Shooting
A pregnant woman, her two young children, and five relatives were shot and killed at a family home in Erie, Pennsylvania, on Friday evening. Police say the suspected gunman, the family's 45-year-old patriarch, died of an apparent self-inflicted wound, and that mental health may have played a role.
A pregnant Pennsylvania woman who was days away from giving birth and her two young children were among eight people shot and killed at a family home in Erie on Friday evening, according to police and local reports. The suspected gunman, a 45-year-old man described as the family's patriarch and grandfather, died from what investigators believe was a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah said Saturday that officers found the victims after responding to the shooting. Investigators believe all eight victims and the suspected gunman were dead before police arrived at the scene. The gunman was related to seven of the eight victims, Lorah said, while the eighth was a family friend.
Angelina Stone, who was eight months pregnant, was identified by local reports as one of those killed. CBS Pittsburgh reported that Stone was four days from her due date, while a family friend told Erie News Now she was expected to deliver within a couple of days. A GoFundMe page organized to help with funeral expenses identified her children as Isiah and Amari'anna and her unborn baby as Kyrie.
Lisa Simmers, a family friend, remembered Stone's children as «beautiful, beautiful children» who «definitely did not deserve what happened to them.» Simmers told Erie News Now that Stone had a daughter who was almost two years old and a son, Isiah, who she believed was four or five.
Neighbor Jennifer Macko told CBS Pittsburgh that the situation was «horrific and unimaginable.» The GoFundMe organizer said the family was seeking help covering funeral expenses for Stone and her children, writing that the loss was «more than our family can carry alone right now» and asking the community to rally around them.
Lorah said mental health may have played a role in the shooting but cautioned that it was too early to determine a motive. The Erie Police Department continues to investigate the case. The department could not immediately be reached for comment.
The shooting has left relatives and neighbors in the Lake Erie city grappling with the scale of the loss. The GoFundMe organizer said donations, whatever the amount, would help ease the financial burden and give Stone, Isiah, Amari'anna, and Kyrie «the farewell they deserve.»
