ReSunny Hostin Revisits Her 2024 Kamala Harris Question, Calling the Answer «Problematic»
«The View» co-host Sunny Hostin revisited her widely discussed 2024 question to Kamala Harris, saying the former vice president's refusal to distance herself from Joe Biden was «problematic» and that she expected a very different answer.
«The View» co-host Sunny Hostin revisited her widely discussed 2024 question to former Vice President Kamala Harris during an event on Monday, calling Harris' answer and her refusal to distance herself from former President Joe Biden at the time «problematic.» The moment, which aired during Harris' appearance on the daytime talk show, has since become a reference point in discussions of the 2024 election cycle and of Harris' political future.
Brian Teta, the show's executive producer and host of its «Behind the Table» podcast, selected the exchange as Hostin's most memorable on the program, describing it as a «seminal moment» in the 2024 campaign. Hostin said she viewed the question as a «gift» and believed Harris would need to separate herself from Biden given his approval ratings at the time. She argued that «The View» was the right venue for the question, describing the show's audience as «her people.»
Hostin said she expected Harris to acknowledge the administration's wins while presenting her own distinct biography and lived experience as a woman of color and child of immigrants. Instead, Hostin recalled, Harris answered that she could not think of a single thing she would have done differently from Biden. «I was not expecting, 'Not a single thing comes to mind,'» Hostin said. «And I knew honestly when she said it that it was really problematic.»
The co-hosts noted that the exchange has been discussed in books published after the 2024 election, including Harris' memoir, «107 Days,» and was also featured in a political ad for President Donald Trump. In the memoir, Harris wrote that she had no idea she had just «pulled the pin on a hand grenade» with her answer, and that her staff were beside themselves. She recalled that during a commercial break, an aide passed her a note urging her to return to the question and mention that a big difference would be putting a Republican in her cabinet.
Co-host Ana Navarro said Harris' staff «ran» after the answer because they recognized immediately that she needed to revisit it. Teta and the co-hosts said they all knew the response would be a problem.
The discussion also touched on Harris' potential 2028 prospects. In a Friday episode, Navarro and co-host Sara Haines said they would not tell Harris not to run but questioned whether she would be the best option for the Democratic Party. Haines said Democrats have been «screaming for new energy» and noted that a third Harris campaign would come after her early exit from the 2020 primary and her time on the ticket with Biden. «People are clamoring for fresh energy, and there's a lot of candidates,» Haines said.
Co-host Joy Behar has said repeatedly that she does not believe the U.S. would elect a woman as president, citing Harris' and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's losses to Trump, and has argued that the party's 2028 nominee should be a man if Democrats want to win. Hostin herself questioned in an April episode whether the presidency was the right position for Harris and said she wished Harris had pursued a run for California governor.
The exchange also drew criticism from outside the show. Nicholas Fondacaro, associate editor of NewsBusters, told Fox News Digital that Hostin's comments illustrated what the Media Research Center has argued to the FCC for months — that «The View» operates as a «propaganda arm» for the Democratic Party. «Sunny openly admitted that her intention with the question was to help Kamala with what she felt was a layup question that would lead to a slam-dunk answer,» Fondacaro said, calling the incident «an abuse of ABC's privileged access to the public broadcast spectrum.»
