ReSteven Soderbergh Steps In to Finish The Batman Part II for Matt Reeves

Warner Bros. has confirmed that Steven Soderbergh will complete the final weeks of principal photography on The Batman Part II while director Matt Reeves attends to an ongoing family matter. Soderbergh will work closely with Reeves to fulfill his original vision, then hand the film back for post-production.

Steven Soderbergh has been brought in to complete the final weeks of principal photography on The Batman Part II while director Matt Reeves tends to an ongoing family matter, Warner Bros. confirmed. The studio said Soderbergh, an admirer of Reeves's work, approached the filmmaker directly and will step in to help finish the superhero sequel.

According to a Warner Bros. representative, Soderbergh and Reeves will work closely together with the actors and crew to fulfill Reeves's vision for the film. The goal is to generate footage that integrates seamlessly with what has already been shot, rather than to take the project in a new direction. Reeves is working remotely from his home during the process, and once filming wraps, Soderbergh will hand the production back to Reeves so he can oversee post-production.

News of Reeves's abrupt departure from the project emerged earlier this month, leaving the film in a state of limbo. DC Studios co-chief Peter Safran had recently indicated that the project would be finished, and the studio has now clarified how that will happen. Soderbergh, who won an Academy Award for Best Director and is known for films such as Ocean's Eleven, is recognized for his efficiency and his ability to handle multiple production roles himself. His reputation for tight budget control and fast shooting is likely to be welcomed by the studio as it works to keep the production on track.

In a statement, Soderbergh praised Reeves's earlier work on The Batman, calling it intentional, specific, and rigorously coherent. He said his aim is to work with Reeves and his team to create footage that will blend seamlessly with the existing material so that Reeves can properly finish his film. The arrangement is designed to preserve the director's original creative vision for the sequel.

It remains unclear whether the production stoppage will lead to another delay. The Batman Part II has already been pushed back several times and is currently scheduled for release on February 18, 2028. Because relatively little shooting is believed to remain, the change may not cause significant setbacks. The sequel continues the story established in Reeves's 2022 film The Batman, which starred Robert Pattinson as the title character and was praised for its grounded, noir-inspired take on the superhero.

Soderbergh's involvement adds a measure of prestige to the production at a delicate moment. His experience directing large ensemble casts and his ability to move quickly through complex shoots make him a practical choice to close out the remaining work. For now, the studio is emphasizing continuity, with both directors collaborating to ensure the finished film reflects Reeves's intentions.
