For players still on older hardware, the big question is which console to buy — or whether to buy one at all.
The PlayStation 5 holds a commanding lead in the current generation, with roughly 95 million units sold compared to an estimated 35 million for Xbox Series X|S. That installed base makes PS5 the default choice for most players. But the decision is not simply about popularity. Pricing, performance expectations, and the possibility of a future PC release all factor into the equation.
Rockstar has not yet confirmed frame-rate targets for GTA 6. Current expectations point to 30 frames per second on the standard PS5 and Xbox Series X, which is unsurprising given the game's scale and visual ambition. The PS5 Pro, with its additional horsepower and PSSR upscaling, could offer an advantage, but whether that translates to a locked 60fps remains unconfirmed. Microsoft's lineup is similarly expensive, with the Xbox Series S at $499.99 and the Xbox Series X at $749.99 for the digital version or $799.99 with a disc drive. These prices reflect a broader trend of rising hardware costs, compounded by ongoing component shortages that have led retailers to warn of potential stock constraints during the holiday period.
Despite the high prices, there is an argument for buying sooner rather than later. Major retailers have reportedly been told they will not receive the number of consoles they want ahead of GTA 6's launch, raising the possibility of shortages. Sony, however, has stated it has secured enough memory to meet its PS5 sales target for the financial year. Still, with GTA 6 expected to drive a significant upgrade cycle, securing a console before November 19 may be prudent for those planning to play at launch.
For budget-conscious buyers, refurbished consoles currently offer the best value. Best Buy is running a promotion that includes a $50 reward certificate with a GTA 6 preorder bundled with an eligible PlayStation 5 or Xbox console. A refurbished PS5 at Best Buy is listed at $539.99, effectively providing about $110 in savings compared to the new disc-drive model's $649.99 price, plus the additional $50 in store credit. It is worth noting that this is the original 2020 PS5 model with an 825GB SSD, not the newer slim 1TB version.
PlayStation's own certified refurbished program is another option. Through the PS Direct store, a refurbished PS5 is currently $549, while the refurbished PS5 Digital Edition is $499. For just $9 more than the Best Buy refurbished model, the PS Direct option includes the newer hardware, making it a competitive choice for buyers looking to minimize costs while getting the most recent version of the console.
Ultimately, the decision comes down to priorities. Players who want the best possible performance and are willing to pay a premium may consider the PS5 Pro, though its $899.99 price tag is hard to justify without confirmed performance targets. Those looking for the most affordable entry point should explore refurbished options and retailer promotions. And for anyone who can wait, the eventual PC release remains a possibility, though no date has been announced. With GTA 6 poised to be one of the biggest releases of the generation, planning ahead could save both money and frustration.
