ReHonda Prelude Limited Edition Heads to Europe, but US Buyers Left Out

Honda has confirmed the 2027 Prelude Limited Edition for Europe with exclusive paint and interior, but American buyers won't get the special model as sales of the hybrid coupe gain momentum in the US.

Honda will bring a limited-run version of its revived Prelude coupe to Europe, but the automaker has no plans to offer the same package in the United States. The 2027 Prelude Limited Edition, first shown in Japan in June, will reach European showrooms with exclusive styling touches and a cabin dressed in deep red materials.

The centerpiece of the Limited Edition is a Premium Crystal Garnet Metallic paint finish that Honda says is designed to catch light and highlight the coupe's body lines in a way that standard white does not. The package also adds red accents on the front and rear bumpers, bright red Brembo brake calipers, and 19-inch black-cut alloy wheels. Inside, the Limited Edition features Bordeaux red materials across the dashboard, seats, door cards, and center console, along with contrast stitching, a Prelude logo embroidered on the dashboard, and red accents on the floor mats.

What the Limited Edition does not change is the powertrain. It carries over the same 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and two electric motors found in the standard Prelude. In Europe, that hybrid setup is rated at 181 horsepower, below the 200 horsepower claimed for the car in Japan and the US. Power goes to the front wheels through Honda's S+ Shift system, which simulates the feel of conventional gears and allows the driver to shift through them using paddles mounted on the leather-wrapped steering wheel.

The Prelude shares several performance components with the Civic Type R, including its dual-axis front suspension, adaptive dampers, and Brembo front brakes. But Honda has not positioned the Prelude as a true Type R model, and that appears to be working in its favor. The car appeals to older buyers who want something fun to drive without the Civic's prominent rear wing and manual transmission.

That strategy seems to be paying off in the US, where the Prelude found 2,077 new owners between January and July of this year despite limited supply. The Subaru BRZ sold 1,785 units over the same period, while the Mazda MX-5 led the group with 5,984 sales. Strong demand for hybrid vehicles, driven in part by rising gas prices, has helped the Prelude gain traction.

But if the Prelude is to continue its upward sales trajectory in the US, it will do so without the Limited Edition. A spokesperson for American Honda said product plans and special editions can vary between regions, and that Honda has «no plans to offer this specific color in the US market at this time.» The decision leaves American buyers with the standard Prelude lineup while European customers get access to the most distinctive version of the reborn coupe.
