ReCreator Content Becomes Key Input for AI Shopping Recommendations
A growing share of consumers want AI product recommendations to include creator and influencer perspectives, pushing brands to invest in credible creator partnerships and structured review data.
AI-powered shopping tools are increasingly relying on creator content to decide which products to surface, and consumers appear to want it that way. Research from IAB found that 56% of shoppers prefer AI-generated recommendations that include perspectives from creators or influencers, according to findings from a survey of 2,200 consumers in five markets who had recently used AI for shopping research.
The survey covered the U.S., U.K., Australia, Mexico and India. The results suggest that while consumers trust AI to find products, they still want a human voice to explain why a given product might suit them. That preference is especially pronounced among younger shoppers, and it gives marketers a fresh reason to treat creator credibility as a business asset rather than a purely promotional channel.
Creator reviews, demonstrations and firsthand accounts give AI systems a steady stream of timely signals about product quality, consumer sentiment and emerging trends. A recent review of a new phone, for example, carries more current information than a review of an older model published years earlier. AI can also track shifts in sentiment over time, so a rise in negative comments about an issue such as battery swelling can flag growing quality concerns before they become a wider problem.
Detailed creator coverage helps AI build a fuller picture of specific products. When a creator reviews a camera model, AI can connect that review with information from other sources to produce a more complete assessment. That dynamic makes credible creators valuable sources of information that can shape what AI recommends to shoppers.
The value of human-generated content is also visible in the data deals struck by major AI companies. Google expanded its partnership with Reddit in February 2024 through a content licensing agreement reportedly worth $60 million per year, giving it access to Reddit's Data API and structured, real-time discussion content. OpenAI reached a similar data-sharing agreement in May 2024, reportedly worth $70 million a year. Reddit CEO Steve Huffman has said that as more internet content is written by machines, there is an increasing premium on content that comes from real people.
At the Cannes advertising festival this year, the connection between creators, AI and consumer trust was discussed by Mohaimina «Mina» Haque, global CEO of Tony Roma's; Damon D. Jones, chief communications officer of P&G creator Paulo Aguilar; and Trevor Fellows, head of advertiser and agency at Nielsen. Jones described the dynamic as consumers needing to hear three voices: the brand, the expert and their fellow consumer. Creators, in that framing, fill the expert role and help shoppers evaluate products with more confidence.
For brands, the practical takeaway is that authenticity and expertise matter more than reach alone. Haque put it as «Reach is rented, but trust compounds.» A creator with 5,000 highly engaged followers may be more effective than one with 100,000 followers if the smaller audience trusts and acts on the recommendations.
Brands are being advised to partner with creators who have real product experience, credibility and strong storytelling. When creator reviews appear on a company's website, structured data should clearly identify the creator, product, review, publication date and rating, with those details visible on the page as well. The details help AI interpret the content, though they do not guarantee inclusion in AI-generated recommendations.
Comments deserve attention too, because AI draws on what consumers say about a brand. As Haque described it, «AI stands for actual intelligence,» and hearing directly from consumers is about as close to that as a brand can get. AI platforms, meanwhile, face pressure to make credible creator perspectives part of the shopping journey, blending reliable brand information with authentic, experience-based reviews.
