ReAmex Adds Airbnb Listings to Travel Platform, Expands Platinum Credits
American Express now lets eligible U.S. cardholders book more than 1 million Airbnb properties through Amex Travel, earn bonus points on prepaid stays, and use Platinum lodging credits at Airbnb Luxe locations.
American Express cardholders can now book Airbnb stays directly through the company's travel platform, after Amex announced a partnership that adds more than 1 million Airbnb listings to Amex Travel. The deal, revealed Thursday, marks the first time the credit card company has integrated short-term rental inventory into a booking service long dominated by traditional hotels.
Eligible U.S. cardholders can make reservations on the American Express Travel website or app and earn Membership Rewards points on prepaid stays. The arrangement gives Airbnb a direct channel to Amex's base of frequent travelers, while Amex broadens a lodging catalog that previously centered on more than 3,400 hotel properties across 116 countries through its Fine Hotels + Resorts and The Hotel Collection programs.
«The place you stay often becomes one of the most memorable parts of a trip,» Howard Grosfield, group president of U.S. consumer services at American Express, said in a statement. He cited company research finding that as many as 82% of consumers say where they stay can be as important as the destination itself. Juan David, global head of partnerships at Airbnb, said the platform's global community of hosts makes it possible to find the right place for every kind of trip, from a family reunion to a weekend away, and described Amex travelers as some of the world's most experienced.
The partnership stops short of making Amex a full-service booking agent for Airbnb. Cardholders can reserve stays through Amex Travel and view their reservations there, but they must still use Airbnb's platform to communicate with hosts or change a reservation. That split reflects the different systems behind hotel bookings and short-term rentals.
Rewards change depending on the card. Consumer and Business Platinum cardholders earn 5x Membership Rewards points on qualifying prepaid Airbnb reservations made through Amex Travel. Other eligible cards enrolled in the Membership Rewards program earn 2x points on those bookings. Consumer Classic Green cardholders will continue to earn 3x points on travel reservations made directly through third-party travel websites, including Airbnb.
The most significant changes affect Platinum cardholders and their existing benefits. American Express is renaming its $600 annual Hotel Credit the «$600 Lodging Credit» to reflect the addition of eligible Airbnb Luxe properties. The credit remains split into two $300 statement credits, one for the first half of the calendar year and one for the second half, for a total of $600 annually.
Those statement credits apply only to eligible Airbnb Luxe properties, not to Airbnb overall, and require travelers to book a prepaid stay of at least two nights through Amex Travel rather than directly through Airbnb. The restrictions mean the credit covers a narrower slice of the platform than the broader listing expansion might suggest.
Amex is also introducing a separate benefit for Consumer and Business Platinum cardholders: up to $250 in annual statement credits toward eligible Airbnb Experiences. The benefit comes with a condition. Cardholders cannot simply book a food tour or dance class and expect the credit. They must first book an Airbnb Luxe property with their card to activate the benefit. Once American Express confirms that booking, the cardholder unlocks access to the Experiences credit for the remainder of the calendar year.
Timing matters. A cardholder who books a Luxe Airbnb in January can book Experiences through December and receive the credit. But because the credit expires at the end of the calendar year, travelers who unlock it late in the year will have less time to use it. The structure encourages early-year bookings while limiting the company's exposure to unused credits.
For American Express, the partnership extends a travel business built on premium hotel relationships into the short-term rental market, where Airbnb holds a dominant position. For Airbnb, the arrangement opens access to cardholders who already use Amex to plan and pay for vacations. Both companies framed the deal around consumer demand for lodging that fits a wider range of trips.
